EHS is a safe haven for thousands of homeless animals each year, providing veterinary treatment, behavioral rehabilitation, care, enrichment and rehoming. The Role
The Manager, Finance is a senior role within the Finance team, working collaboratively with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Finance team members to drive the success of the department and the organization. This role ensures effective management of financial responsibilities, risk mitigation, and relationship maintenance to achieve financial sustainability. The Manager, Finance provides leadership and operational support to organizational leaders, focusing on setting and achieving financial goals, policy development, and meeting strategic and operational needs.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
Accounting and Internal Control
- Develop and enforce internal financial and accounting policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with statutory requirements, including charitable status, payroll, taxation, and GST regulations.
- Collaborate with the CFO on annual audit activities.
- Create and maintain internal control systems for cash management, accounts payable/receivable, and procurement.
- Oversee bank reconciliations and investment accounts.
- Analyze contracts for cost-effectiveness and mitigate contractual risks.
- Ensure compliance with data security and current legislation.
- Manage capital asset acquisition and maintain proper records.
- Support Accounts Payable with cross-training and coverage.
- Complete Accounts Receivable reconciliations and monthly validations.
- Oversee payroll functions and provide relief support as needed.
- Facilitate inventory reconciliation for retail and medical departments.
Financial Reporting and Budget Management
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and reports for stakeholders and the Board of Directors.
- Maintain forecasting processes and provide monthly variance analysis.
- Collaborate on agency reporting requirements (e.g., AGLC, City of Edmonton).
- Prepare the annual charitable return (T3010) and ensure compliance.
- Support the development of budgets for grant funding applications.
- Establish and lead integrated budget planning processes, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
- Assist directors and managers with budget preparation and management.
Leadership and Staff Management
- Supervise and mentor the Finance team, providing guidance on accounting principles and best practices.
- Conduct performance reviews and provide ongoing feedback.
- Develop cross-training plans for Finance team members to ensure task coverage and adherence to segregation of duties.
- Collaborate with the CFO on departmental budget development.
- Actively participate in cross-organizational leadership initiatives.
Risk Management and Technology
- Monitor and enforce risk management policies to minimize organizational risk.
- Collaborate with the CFO and IT to evaluate financial technology needs and implement updates.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Education & Requirements
- University Degree in Accounting, Commerce, or Business Management/Administration or a relevant degree/discipline or equivalent experience and education combined.
- Chartered Professional Accountant designation or equivalent experience or in progress
- Minimum 5 years of experience in Accounting or Finance.
- Minimum 2 years in a leadership role in an organization of similar size and complexity
- Proficiency with Sage software is an asset.
- Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Knowledge of federal/provincial legislation affecting charities and payroll.
- Proficiency in accounting systems, spreadsheets, databases, and communication tools.
- Knowledge of payroll and provincial legislation on Employment Standards, Occupational Health and Safety, and Human Rights

Compensation & Hours
- Compensation: EHS offers a competitive not-for-profit compensation package which includes a comprehensive benefits package, and a strong work-life balance.
- Hours: 40 hours a week; however, is expected to work hours as required to fulfill department responsibilities. Some evenings and weekends may be required.
