About the Campus Food Bank
The Campus Food Bank (CFB) is a nonprofit organization serving the University of Alberta community. Committed to equitable food access, the CFB addresses immediate hunger needs while advocating for systemic changes to eliminate food insecurity. Following a recent period of rapid growth and change, the organization is now entering into strategic planning to accommodate this new level of demand in the years ahead.
The organization’s work is guided by core values of innovation, inclusivity, and collaboration, creating a welcoming space where students, faculty, and staff can access food resources and support.
Position Title: Executive Director
Reports To: Board of Directors
Job Summary: The Executive Director provides visionary leadership and strategic management to advance the Campus Food Bank’s mission of championing immediate and systemic food accessibility at the University of Alberta. The ED is responsible for overseeing programs, operations, fundraising, media relations, community engagement, and advocacy efforts, ensuring alignment with the organization’s vision of equitable food access across the campus community.
Key Responsibilities
1. Strategic Leadership and Vision
- Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of the Campus Food Bank’s strategic plan, ensuring alignment with the organization’s mission, vision, and values.
- Provide leadership in identifying and pursuing opportunities to better serve the campus community.
- Act as a thought leader on food security issues, staying informed on trends and best practices to position the organization as a key resource and advocate.
- Lead in alignment with CFB beliefs and commitments to promote equity and inclusion across all aspects of the organization, ensuring services and programs are accessible and welcoming to all members of the campus community.
2. Organizational and Program Oversight
- Oversee the planning, delivery, and evaluation of all programs and services to ensure they meet the needs of the diverse campus population.
- Utilize systems to measure and report program outcomes, using data to inform continuous improvement efforts.
- Collaborate with staff and stakeholders to develop innovative initiatives that address both immediate food needs and long-term food security challenges.
3. Fundraising and Financial Stewardship
- Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy to secure financial resources, including public and private grants, major and annual campaigns, sponsorships, and food recovery.
- Build and maintain relationships with individual, corporate, and campus donors, ensuring their continued engagement and support.
- Oversee financial management, including budgeting, forecasting, and reporting, to ensure transparency, accountability, and sustainability.
4. Community Engagement and Advocacy
- Act as the primary representative and advocate for the Campus Food Bank, building relationships with university leaders, student groups, community partners, and policymakers.
- Act as the media representative for the organization.
- Develop and implement communication strategies to increase awareness of food insecurity and the organization’s impact.
- Advocate for systemic changes to policies and practices that impact food security on campus and beyond.
5. Human Resources Management
- Foster an inclusive, supportive workplace culture that aligns with the organization’s values of collaboration and innovation.
- Lead the recruitment, development, and retention of staff, ensuring they are equipped to succeed in their roles.
- Implement best practices in HR management, including performance evaluation, professional development, and conflict resolution.
6. Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI)
- Actively promote equity and inclusion across all aspects of the organization, ensuring services and programs are accessible and welcoming to all members of the campus community.
- Address and dismantle systemic barriers, including racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination, within the organization’s policies and practices.
7. Governance and Reporting
- Collaborate with the Board of Directors to ensure effective governance, providing regular updates on organizational performance, finances, and strategic initiatives.
- Support the Board in fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities, including strategic planning, risk management, and compliance.
- Work with Board committees to enhance the organization’s effectiveness and sustainability.
Key Deliverables
- Strategic Goals: Lead the successful implementation of the strategic plan, achieving measurable results within identified timelines.
- Program Outcomes: Deliver programs and services that effectively address the food security needs of the campus community, supported by regular outcome evaluations.
- Fundraising Targets: Meet or exceed annual fundraising goals through diversification of revenue to ensure the organization’s financial health and growth.
- Community Impact: Strengthen partnerships across the university and broader community, enhancing the Campus Food Bank’s reputation and reach.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred, but not required.
- At least 3-5 years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit management, social services, or a related sector.
- Proven track record of successful fundraising, including securing grants, major gifts, and sponsorships.
- Experience in advocacy, community engagement, and public relations.
- Strong financial acumen, including budget development and management.
- Experience working within the University of Alberta community.
Skills and Competencies:
- Exceptional leadership and strategic planning skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication abilities, including public speaking and stakeholder engagement.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships across diverse groups and settings.
- Confidence with budgeting, financial tracking, reporting, and forecasting.
- Strong anti-oppressive values and a demonstrated commitment to social justice.
- Knowledge of issues related to food security and systemic barriers to access.
- Proficiency in nonprofit governance, operations, and compliance.
- A valid Class 5 Operator’s License or equivalent, and clean driver’s abstract (3 years) is required. Access to one’s own car is an asset.
Working Conditions
- Work Environment: Primarily office-based on the University of Alberta campus, with occasional off-site meetings and events.
- Hours: Full-time (35 hours/week), including some evenings and weekends for events and meetings.
- Physical Demands: Involves physical tasks such as moving supplies up to 50 lbs.
- Mental Demands: Requires managing complex issues, balancing priorities, and addressing food insecurity challenges with resilience.
- Technology Use: Regular use of computers, virtual platforms, and office equipment; proficiency with relevant tools is necessary.
- Inclusivity: The organization values a safe, accessible, and inclusive environment for all.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary: $75 000, with review after first year
