Position Summary:

The Domestic Violence Remote Testimony Facilitator will enhance enCompass’s ongoing efforts to provide comprehensive support to individuals impacted by domestic violence, ensuring they have access to the necessary resources to navigate the justice system with confidence and security. The Remote Testimony for Domestic Violence Complainants is designed to enhance the participation of domestic violence complainants in the legal process by providing a safe and supportive environment for testifying. The Domestic Violence Remote Testimony Facilitator will advocate for the approval and use of remote testimony in the court system by engaging with justice partners such as Crown Prosecutors, Defence attorneys, Judiciary, and community organizations to raise awareness about the benefits of this method. The program will utilize a dedicated remote testimony room, allowing complainants to testify without the fear of encountering their abuser in the courtroom. Staff will support complainants throughout the process, including pre-testimony preparation, technology setup, and providing emotional support during the testimony itself.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct environmental scans in other communities to identify best practices and challenges in implementing remote testimony for individuals involved in domestic violence criminal court
  • Engage with stakeholders in the Criminal Justice System, including the Judiciary, Crown Prosecutors, Defence counsel and other court partners, to promote awareness and advocate for the use of the remote testimony room
  • Conduct educational meetings and presentations with Criminal Justice stakeholders regarding barriers that impact in-person testifying in cases of domestic violence
  • Develop informational content packages for Criminal Justice stakeholders regarding remote testimony
  • Collaborate with enCompass’s Domestic Violence Justice Response (DVJR) team and community partners to align efforts and provide integrated support for domestic violence complainants
  • Provide direct client support in navigating the remote testimony equipment, providing tech assistance, and emotional support during the trial process
  • Debrief with clients following remote testimony, address concerns, provide connection to additional resources, and obtain feedback on their experience

Qualifications / Skills:

  • Post-secondary diploma in human services or related field
  • 2 years of experience in working with victims of family violence
  • Professionalism within all aspects of employment and able to contribute to a positive team environment
  • Deep understanding of victimization and the dynamics of domestic violence
  • Assessment, interpersonal, written and verbal communication, and engagement skills
  • Experience working with diverse populations, including stakeholders, and ability to provide culturally relevant services
  • Experience with community engagement, delivering presentations, or facilitating educational sessions
  • Experience developing presentation materials
  • Knowledge of community resources and experience accessing resources
  • General proficiency with computer technology (Microsoft Office, Outlook, Zoom, Teams, etc.)
  • Ability to work within confidentiality guidelines

Conditions of Employment:

  • Temporary 1-year contract; with the possibility of extension
  • This position will have a base location at Transition Place, 10010 105 Street, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday – Friday.
  • The role will require regular attendance at the Edmonton Law Courts, enCompass office, and community engagement activities. Travel will primarily be within Edmonton and the surrounding area, with bi-weekly engagement with community partners.
  • Valid Standard First Aid/CPR
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and insurance of up to $2,000,000.00
  • Clear Criminal Record, Vulnerable Sector Check, and Child Intervention Record Check; a criminal record will not disqualify you from employment with us; we evaluate each application individually.
