Custodian / Maintenance
Reports to: Director, Fund Development and Services
Date: December 2024
30 Hours per week, permanent
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday
Weekend work required for special events
Overview
This position is fundamental to the core of SEESA. It ensures our building and grounds are clean, neat and operational in a safe manner that meets industry standards and upholds SEESA’s policies and procedures. This important role allows SEESA to have a warm, safe and welcoming facility that is conducive to implementing our mission: To empower and enhance the quality of life of people in our community as we age.
Responsibilities
- Keeps the building including the gym, café and kitchen cleaned as per schedule and as required for special events.
- Sets up and takes down of rooms for scheduled programs, events and rentals.
- Identifies items that are deficient which require City of Edmonton action.
- Checks, cleans and fixes SEEESA equipment and items for longevity.
- Performs routine maintenance checks and activities such as fixing door handles, repairing broken switches, hanging pictures/TV’s, changing clocks, etc.
- Performs heavy cleaning duties, such as shampooing or steam-cleaning carpets and rugs, scrubbing, waxing, stripping and refinishing.
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs or vacuums floors ensuring floors are safe for all types of mobility stages.
- Gathers and empty garbage and recycle items.
- Monitors recycling and garbage bins and requests additional pick up.
- Scrubs, sanitizes, and supplies washrooms.
- Manages inventory of cleaning supplies and orders supplies as required.
- Assists with inventory management of SEESA equipment and furniture.
- Cleans windows, sills and mirrors, dusts furniture, walls and equipment.
- Mixes cleaning solutions and chemicals in containers in preparation for cleaning, according to standards.
- Follows procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power machinery to ensure personal safety and prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
- Creates and updates WHIMS data sheets as required.
- Attends to and acts as liaison for rentals and evening activities as required.
- Operates vehicles required to perform work, including floor washing machine, outdoor grass tractor, and other heavy equipment as required.
- During the winter months, monitors and assists with emergent de-icing and sanding of walkways.
- At the end of day, ensures the building is emptied, locked, lights off, and armed at the end of each shift.
- Works with staff and volunteers in a positive productive manner.
- Maintains an annual planning calendar.
- Be a positive ambassador for the agency.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications
- Previous cleaning, janitorial, and light maintenance experience.
- Knowledge in standard cleaning methods.
- Knowledge and experience in the use of and maintenance of industrial cleaning equipment and appliances.
- Physical endurance to conduct all work required in accordance with established guidelines and standards.
- Ability to perform repetitive motion for hours.
- Ability to lift heavy objects and climb ladders.
- Experience with using cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor cleaning machines, and cleaning solutions.
- Knowledge and experience of safe disposal of chemical liquids and other hazardous materials.
- Knowledge in basic repairs and maintenance.
- Knowledge in occupational health and safety.
- Experience with Microsoft computer programs.

Working Conditions and Requirements
- This is an on-site position (30 hours) Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, from 12:30 pm to 8:30 pm; Fridays from 1:30 pm – 9:30 pm.
- The first 4 weeks will require orientation, paid time, Wednesdays from 4:30 – 10 pm
- Some later evenings and weekends may be required.
- Heavy lifting is required. (up to 50 lbs)
- Light repairs are required.
- Required certifications:
- First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate
- Criminal Record and Vulnerable Persons Sector Check
- WHMIS Certificate of Training (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
