At the Alberta Students’ Executive Council (ASEC) we are a small not-for-profit organization committed to advocating for post-secondary students and advancing their rights and well-being. ASEC empowers and unites student leaders to advocate for the best interests of post-secondary students in Alberta, ensuring accessible advanced education and quality of life for students. We achieve this through comprehensive advocacy efforts, awareness campaigns, consulting and engaging with various interest holders, and offering solutions to promote student-focused policy change. Our members are 15 students’ associations of publicly funded post-secondaries across Alberta, representing over 90,000 students.
Job Overview
We are seeking a Communications and Engagement Advisor to join our small and dynamic team. With 2-5 years of communications, PR, and/or community engagement experience, you will be responsible for developing and implementing communication strategies, managing outreach initiatives, and increasing engagement with key interest holders including students, members, partner organizations, media, and government. You will play a key role in amplifying our advocacy efforts through compelling storytelling, member engagement, and executing key organizational activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Communications Strategy: Develop and execute communications strategies that support our advocacy objectives and increase our visibility as a key interest holder in the post-secondary sector.
- Brand Management: Establish a clear brand identity, engrain and maintain the ASEC brand in all internal and external communications channels.
- Content Creation: Write and edit a wide variety of content, including press releases, social media posts, newsletters, blog articles, and annual reports, to engage diverse audiences and elevate the organization’s message.
- Media Relations: Cultivate and maintain relationships to secure media coverage and raise awareness about the organization’s work and the issues affecting post-secondary students.
- Social Media Management: Manage the organization’s social media presence, including creating content calendars, curating posts, and engaging with followers to build a strong online community.
- Member Engagement: Work closely with student leaders and students’ associations to ensure Members’ interests are continuously represented in ASEC, and that Members remain engaged participants in ASEC’s work.
- Campaign Management: Plan, execute, and evaluate communications campaigns, ensuring they are aligned with our advocacy priorities and effectively engage the target audience.
- Event Planning and Support: Support planning and execution of annual conferences, advocacy events and activities, member learning opportunities, and communicate details of Member meetings throughout the year.
- Impact Reporting: Measure the effectiveness of communications and engagement efforts and provide regular reports on key performance indicators (KPIs).
Qualifications
- A degree or diploma in communications, public relations, business, or related field.
- 2-5 years of experience directly related to the job description.
- Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills with the ability to adapt voice and tone to different audiences (students, policymakers, media, etc.).
- Experience managing social media accounts and online communities, with a strong understanding of best practices
- Proven ability to build and maintain professional relationships with multiple partners including media contacts, students, and partner organizations.
- Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Understanding and experience presenting research-informed data clearly with visual aides and appropriate sourcing.
- Familiarity and preferred fluency with Google Drive, Wix, Canva, and MailChimp
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a small team environment.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks effectively in a dynamic environment.
- A positive attitude with a desire to continue learning and growing as a professional
- Experience working with students’ associations, member associations, and/or government is considered an asset.
- Be legally eligible to work in Canada in a full-time continuing basis.
Work Environment
- ASEC has a small team of 2-3 staff members
- Employees enjoy flexibility of work hours and location with key on-site collaboration days and in-person events and meetings expected. Minimum 3 days per week in office.
- Full-time employees receive employer-paid health and dental, employee-paid STD and LTD, RRSP matching to 3% of salary, and a professional development allotment.
- Full-time employees begin accruing vacation at a rate of 3 weeks per year in addition to an annual closure during winter break.
- ASEC’s office is currently located at 11520 100 Avenue with parking provided, however we plan to move to a new central space by October.
